Dear New and Returning IHP Parents, Students, and Teachers,
The Friends of the IHP (FIHP) welcomes you to Walter Reed Middle School.
The IHP program is the oldest continuous program for Highly Gifted Students in LAUSD (founded 1970). This ‘Smaller Learning Community’ (SLC) is an exceptional classroom and educational experience, designed for the unique needs of Highly Gifted student and offers challenges not generally offered in an honors level middle school course of study. Students are expected to demonstrate readiness to tackle an accelerated, and/or compacted curriculum in all academic subjects, led by an immensely talented and dedicated staff. The IHP offers advanced lecture courses in math classes (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II); utilizes high school and college level textbooks. Students produce writing pieces far above grade level expectation. IHP students take intellectual risks to go deeper, not just further, in their academic subjects.
The Friends of IHP (FIHP) is a non-profit organization that supports every IHP student, at every grade level. FIHP works cooperatively with other school wide groups, such as the PTSA, Music Boosters, and Friends of Reed, which separately raises money to benefit all Walter Reed students. FIHP is the only organization 100% dedicated to supporting the unique needs of IHP students, however we extend our financial support to Friends of Reed and the Music Department as needed, given that the majority of our students benefit from the initiatives led by those programs.
FIHP’s suggested contribution for Annual Giving is $700 per child per year, or any amount that works for you, to directly benefit your child and classroom this school year. This campaign continues to fill the gap created by LAUSD budget cuts and to maintain the integrity of our highly regarded IHP program.
We encourage and welcome all parents to attend our monthly FIHP meetings to participate in discussions and decision-making about how our donations are spent. Dates and times are posted on the school calendar and weekly email blasts. We hope to you see you there!
